WHAG Research

The Black Minority Ethnic (BME) Development Project was established in May 2003. The initial remit of the project was to offer support to BME women and to further extend research, conducted by WHAG in 2000, by investigating the housing and support requirements of BME women living in the Borough of Rochdale.

The BME Development Project is dedicated to the needs of BME women. The service employs two skilled workers who have the knowledge and insight of the cultural, religious and bi-lingual needs of BME women. Since May 2003 the support workers have supported over one hundred women.

In 2005 the BME Development Project produced a piece of research which highlights the barriers faced by BME women when accessing housing and support. The aim, objectives, and key findings of the research are detailed as follows:

Aims

To highlight the housing and support needs of women from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Groups in the Borough of Rochdale.

Objective

  • To identify gaps in the housing provision of BME women;
  • To identify the barriers that may prevent BME women accessing housing;
  • To look at ways of making housing provision more accessible to BME women;
  • To evaluate the continuing need for the provision of support services to enable
  • BME women to access and maintain appropriate housing
